Course Description  

This course is an introduction to different types of investment vehicles: savings accounts, certificates of deposit, bonds, stocks, ETFs and mutual funds. The course covers terminology, research tools and investment strategies for each of the different alternatives. It includes discussions about basic economic indicators, basic investment vocabulary, IRAs and overviews of income statements and balance sheets.

 Course Objectives  

  • The objective of this course is to provide to you with all the tools necessary to begin an individual investment program in any or all the different investment alternatives.

 

  • The course will provide you with all the vocabulary associated with each of the vehicles as well as provide you many resources for investigating and researching different alternatives to find the best investment options.

 

  • Upon completion of this course you will have a very sophisticated view of investing which will allow you to easily understand all business news broadcasts emphasizing investing such as Wall Street Week in Review or many of the daily programs on CNN or MSNBC or other news channels. 

 

 
Evaluations and Expectations  

  • There will be a series of quizzes covering 9 of the modules on the CD and ranging in value from 5 to 10 points each.  These are online but may be given during class time.  You will only have 1 opportunity to do the quizzes so know when they are scheduled.

 

  • There will be individual projects which will test your ability to navigate the many available financial websites. These will be normally done during class time and there are no make-ups for them.

 

  • There are two written assignments for 10 points which will help you begin to hone your investigative and analytic techniques.

 

  • There are two major written projects on specific stocks (25 points) and mutual funds (15 points).

Attendance Policy 
  • Students are not required to attend class however we will be doing exercises and quizzes in class which cannot be made up.  Students who do come to class will earn extra credit points.

 

  • A sign-up sheet will be passed around during the latter part of each class period. Students will receive points for each time they are in class. However any student who misses more than 5 classes will receive no extra credit points.

 

  • There are NO EXCUSED absences for ANY reason, so do not miss class unless it is completely unavoidable. It is your responsibility to find the sheet if you are a few minutes late to class.  If you attend University sponsored outside activities this will count as unexcused absences so plan accordingly.

Textbook  
  • The textbook for this course is the CD Personal Investing available at Instructional Resources.


Grading Policy 

  • Grades are based on a strict percentage: 90%+ A range; 80 to 90% B range; 65 to 79% C range; 55 to 64% D range and less than 55% F. Students taking the course for C/NC or P/F must have a 67% average to receive credit for the course.   The grading scale is at the bottom of the grade page.
